Community Hall Patio

The Blackburn Little League has designated funds in their reserve account for a community project, which includes the construction of a large patio off the South end of the community building. Plans for the patio are not yet finalized, but so far it will be built with interlocking brick and installed by community volunteers. Councillor Rainer Bloess is heading up this project, and will need all the help and experience he can get. Please call him if you are in a position to help out. I’m sure it won’t be all work and no play. The BCA and the community want to express their gratitude to the Blackburn Little League for their thoughtfulness and generosity.

Patio 2001

On the Saturday of the May long weekend our Community Hall got a new patio. Under the skillful direction of volunteer foreman Dana Doherty, over twenty members of our community installed over 14,000 bricks while constructing a 60’ b y 30 ’ patio. The costs of the project were shared by councillor Rainer Bloess, City of Ottawa Operations Department, and a cash donation from the Blackburn Senior Hardball Team.

Innes Road Improvements

The continuation of the road improvements to Innes Road will go to Council June 13th and construction is expected to start on July 4th. The extent of the work will depend upon the final costs once the tenders have been opened, but the City expects to be able to start where last year’s work ended and continue east towards the first Eastpark intersection. The total budget for this work is $500,000, and will include repair and resurfacing Innes Rd., new signals at Orient Park, the filling of the ditches on the north side, and sidewalks. This work is considerably less complicated than last summer’s project, and is scheduled to be completed shortly after the Labour Day weekend.

Innes Road Zoning

The BCA made representations to City Council through letters and attendance at their May 9th meeting, where the mayor broke a tie vote to maintain the recent zoning decision concerning the Woodburn farm and exclude the construction of a large retail food outlet on that site. This is encouraging news for Blackburn since it reaffirms the city’s support for businesses in Blackburn by offering some protection to the newly renovated Loeb store in our community.
