I have some very exciting news. Recently, I had the great honour of bringing forward a motion to name the baseball diamond at Blackburn Park in honour of our own Gregory Kazmierski, aka “Mayor Greg.” The motion passed unanimously and I am deeply proud to see this tribute becoming a reality.
Greg was a cherished part of Blackburn Hamlet. For 35 years, he worked at the Metro grocery store, where his friendly smile and kind spirit became a daily highlight for generations of residents. His presence brought joy, warmth and connection to everyone who knew him. Whether greeting neighbours, cheering at local games or simply being part of everyday life, Greg had a way of making people feel welcome and appreciated.
Even after his passing in 2023, Greg’s legacy lives on in the stories people share, the laughter he inspired and the sense of belonging he helped create. Naming the diamond in his honour is a meaningful way to recognize the impact he had on our community and how he inspired us all to celebrate the Hamlet and each other.
As a next step, a commemorative plaque and signage will be installed at the diamond, and I will work with Greg’s family and friends to find a date for a grand unveiling and community celebration where everyone will be welcome.
This is a small way to recognize the role played in bringing us all together as a community, and to recognize the importance of the volunteer and community focused spirit that drives Blackburn Hamlet, making it such an incredible place to call home.
