Topic: A Day in the House of Commons
Speaker: Jeffrey LeBlanc, Deputy Clerk, Procedure
You might have seen a quick news clip from Question Period, but what is an actual day in the House of Commons like? Who decides what gets debated or when matters come to a vote? How do parties prepare for Question Period? How does the Speaker oversee proceedings? What goes on behind the curtains? This session takes you through a typical sitting day, explaining the different parts of the House’s schedule, how the business is organized and how important matters get decided. It will also focus on key players involved in preparing for a sitting and how you can follow the progress of a particular bill or motion.
Jeffrey LeBlanc was appointed Deputy Clerk, Procedure of the House of Commons in March 2023. He is responsible for the team that provides procedural and legislative support to Members of Parliament in the House and in committees. Jeffrey began his career on Parliament Hill as a Page in 1995 and was hired as a Procedural Clerk in 2000. He became a Table Officer in 2007, providing advice to five different Speakers of the House.
