Blackburn Hamlet Funfair Day 1997

“Building our community” by Sherry Woodburn and Chantal Goyette

What a great day for a spectacular community tradition! The weather was fantastic, and everyone was in the mood for joining in the various events. The rain held out for the parade on Friday evening, and it was heartwarming to see so many people from our community participating in the parade: toddlers in wagons and on the backs of bikes, young children walking with their families, school friends or community groups, teens on the floats, and adults and senior citizens partaking in the event. The Bavarian Garden on Friday night was an overwhelming success, judging by the number of people who reunited with their friends and listened or danced along to the State of Confusion band, who performed free of charge. Saturday was another success as many decided to get an early start on the Fun Day with a hearty and very reasonably priced breakfast. There were activities to watch and participate in for all ages, and by all accounts, the Fun Fair was a resounding success.

The tradition of using Fun Fair funds to enhance our community continues as 25% of the Fun Fair proceeds will be put towards building a centre where community groups of all ages can meet for their weekly, bi-weekly or occasional meetings.

The Fun Fair is organized by volunteers who want to ensure that the legacy of a Fun Fair community celebration day for persons of all ages continues. There are many benefits to working on the Fun Fair committee. They will meet other individuals in the Hamlet who care about the community in which their family live to volunteer some time and energy. The experience of planning or organizing an activity, big or small, is personally very satisfying and provides great insights into the amount of energy and commitment that is required to organize such an event. All in all, it is a wonderful experience to participate in such a great community tradition, and we urge each person to start thinking about how they can contribute to the success of next year’s Fun Fair. As fall approaches, plans will get underway for next year’s Fun Fair.

Once again, we would like to thank the Fun Fair team and their families for giving so generously of their time, energy and commitment. There were many un-named community members who gave their time to run errands, do pick-ups and deliveries and other necessary jobs, THANK YOU. The Fun Fair was a success because of your generosity and co-operation.

We want to especially thank the stores and businesses for their generous donations of cash and / or merchandise and urge the community to support our local businesses.

THANKS TO ALL. WE WILL MEET YOU AT NEXT YEAR’S FAIR.
