BCA Bites!

Did you know that BCA Volunteers maintain and water the flower gardens in front of the three entrance signs and the one at Innes and Bearbrook? Each year our energetic Beautification Director, Miriam Hampson, organizes a crew of volunteers to keep the gardens looking great!

Kids Splish Splash Summer Bash

August 3rd, 2025, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Come celebrate summer outside the hall by the splash pad where there will be music, snacks, outdoor games, and plenty of opportunities to cool down and get soaked! Wear your bathing suit and feel free to bring your water guns. Kids must be accompanied by an adult.

If there is rain/ thunder showers on this day, there will still be an event with activities, music and snacks in the Blackburn Community Hall at 190 Glen Park Drive, beginning at 11:00 AM but ending earlier, at 1:30 PM.

Blackburn Seniors (55+) are invited to gather for a great meal, wonderful conversation and lots of laughs on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at 9:00 AM at Halibut House, 2672 Innes Road

Donations of non-perishable items for the Lifecentre Foodbank would be appreciated.

Christmas Market Vendor Applications

The Blackburn Hamlet Community Association’s (BCA) annual Christmas Market will be held this year on November 8th from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM at the Community Hall and in the Lois Kemp Arena.

Applications for vendors will be accepted starting on August 5th. The selection of the 29 vendors will be announced by mid-September. To sign up as a vendor, visit blackburnhamlet.ca/events/christmas-market/ starting on August 5th.

All registration fees collected from vendors will be donated to Mental Health research and patient support at the Ottawa Hospital.

Vendor details:

Set Up and Tear Down – Vendors will be invited to set up their tables at 8:30 AM. Tables will need to be cleared by 4:00 PM.
Cost – Minimum donation of $60 per table. Tables are approximately 6×3.
Parking – Ample free parking is available to vendors on the street and nearby plaza. Vendors can park briefly by the hall to unload and load their wares.

Aspira Bearbrook Retirement Residence, the BCA and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute are working together to offer to Blackburn residents aged 65+ with no known heart issues the opportunity to have a free heart-valve disease screening appointment.

Duplicate Bridge in Blackburn Hamlet

Duplicate Bridge Cards

There are two separate sessions of duplicate bridge that take place in the Blackburn Community Hall,

Each group meets regularly in the Community Hall for friendly duplicate bridge. All are welcome. Players should have a basic knowledge of the game but need not have any experience in duplicate bridge. The sessions are played from early September to late June with a break for the holiday season.

Sessions typically run for about 3 hours. Games are usually 24 to 30 boards. If you have a partner all you need to do is show up a few minutes before start of play. Anyone looking for a partner can contact one of the directors listed above to see if a suitable partner can be found. There is a nominal fee to cover the cost of renting the facility, the bridge supplies, and any refreshments. Feel free to contact either Bill Durning or Ken Pearson for more details.

Lessons can be arranged to either introduce people to the game or to improve their skills. Contact Ken Pearson for more information.

New Speed Camera on Bearbrook

Speed Camera Coming Soon Bearbrook North The signs are up and construction is expected to begin in mid August to install the new automated speed enforcement camera on Bearbrook Road across from École secondaire publique Louis-Riel. The goal is to have the camera operational by late fall.

All revenue generated from tickets issued via the Automated Speed Enforcement program is reinvested into the City of Ottawa’s Road Safety Action Plan program, which uses education, engineering and enforcement to promote road safety for all road users.
