Wonderful Writers 2022: Essay Competition for Blackburn Youth
As part of its youth engagement activities, the BCA is inviting Blackburn youth aged 9 to 17 to participate in its Wonderful Writers 2022 essay competition. The overall theme for this contest is Coming of Age.
Participants are invited to draft a 450 to 500 word essay on one of the following three topics:
- Coming of age: do existing rituals or rites of passage in our society successfully mark the end of childhood and adolescence?
- Potential and limits: how does one reconcile the idea of limitless potential and the reality of personal limits?
- Competence and autonomy: what could be some of the consequences of our society’s strong focus on individual competence and autonomy?
Evaluation criteria for the essays are as follows: thesis statement; organization/structure; support and development of ideas; insight; clarity; style and spelling and punctuation.
The first place winner will receive a cash prize of $125 and two follow-up winners will each receive $75.
The terms and conditions for the contest are as follows:
- Participants must be residents of Blackburn Hamlet
- Participants must be aged 9-17 as of the end of 2022.
- Essays must be between 450 and 500 words. No pictures or graphics are allowed.
- The text of each essay must include a title that reflects the chosen topic (use one of the three topics provided above).
Essays must be submitted as a PDF file labelled as follows: First Name_Last Name_Name of School_Age as of 31 Dec 2022_Name of Home Street Address (e.g. Marlene_Smith_Glen Ogilvie_12_Northpark). - The PDF file must be for a clean version with no track changes visible.
- Please use Times New Roman (or similar font) size 12.
- Deadline for submission is October 14, 2022.
- Only one submission per applicant is allowed.
