Winter has arrived in Ottawa, and with it comes a need for an extra level of safety. As recent events have shown, both the road and sidewalk conditions can change significantly compared to the warmer months. Icy conditions, hardened snow banks and concentrated slush can make both walking and driving treacherous. When walking in the winter, wear proper footwear and consider snow grips for the bottoms of your shoes or boots. Do not hurry while walking outside. Pay attention to your steps and walk slowly. Take small steps, almost from side to side, to maintain your centre of gravity.
On another note, residents should be aware that the National Capital Commission (NCC) is making security changes to their property near the Just Food Farm, along Tauvette Road. The NCC is erecting a fence that will provide additional security to their property while still allowing residents the use of the land for enjoyable walking and leisure. The project is expected to be completed by early spring.
For those who may be interested, the Durham Regional Police have created 3 excellent videos on the Neighbourhood Watch Program. The videos depict the merits and benefits of the program and how it makes communities safer. Check them out on their YouTube channel, and contact safety@blackburnhamlet.ca to learn more.
