DESCRIPTION:Education\, Society\, and Generative AI \nA number of artificial intelligence (AI) programs came out in the early 2020s that generate images (like Midjourney)\, music\, and text (like ChatGPT). These generative AI programs surprised even long-time AI researchers with what they could do. How do they work? How will they affect education\, creative work for humans\, and society in general? \nOur speaker will be Jim Davies (http://www.jimdavies.org/)\, professor at the Department of Cognitive Science at Carleton University in Ottawa\, Ontario. He is the author of Imagination: The Science of Your Mind’s Greatest Power and Riveted: The Science of Why Jokes Make us Laugh\, Movies Make us Cry\, and Religion Makes us Feel One with the Universe\, and Being the Person Your Dog Thinks You Are: The Science of a Better You. He co-hosts (with Dr. Kim Hellemans) the award-winning podcast Minding the Brain. Director of the Science of Imagination Laboratory\, he explores processes of visualization in humans and machines and specializes in artificial intelligence\, analogy\, problem-solving\, and the psychology of art\, religion\, and creativity. \nIn his spare time\, he is a published poet\, game designer\, and fiction writer\, an internationally-produced playwright\, and a professional artist and calligrapher. His sister is novelist JD Spero.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the next Discovery Café lecture: “Tales from a Research Laboratory”. \nDr. John ApSimon — retired Professor of Chemistry at Carleton University\, Blackburn Hamlet resident and Discovery Café founder – began his research career in the study of the chemistry of natural products at the University of Liverpool in the 1950’s. Coming to Canada on a research fellowship to NRC\, he then joined Carleton in 1962. His impressive career spans over 40 years in several domains\, each of which has a fascinating story. \nIn this session\, Dr. ApSimon will recount the reasons for pursuing his research pathways and describe his findings and experiences. SUMMARY:2023 Cancer Chase
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Cancer Chase event will be a collaboration between the Blackburn Hamlet Community Association (BCA) and the Convent Glen-Orléans Wood Community Association (CGOWCA). The event will be held on September 24 at 975 Orleans Boulevard\, near the Cairine Wilson High School in Convent Glen. \nAll funds from the Cancer Chase event go directly to cancer research at the Ottawa Hospital via the Ottawa Hospital Foundation (OHF). The Cancer Chase event has become a vibrant community event that can be enjoyed by the entire family while at the same time supporting a worthwhile cause. DESCRIPTION:Looking for 10-12 individuals who live\, work or play in Blackburn Hamlet to participate in a Focus Group with the University of Montreal. \nWhat: Blackburn Hamlet has been invited by the University of Montreal to participate in a focus group on Lyme disease. \nAs part of this project\, we are recruiting individuals (citizens\, scientists\, administrators\, etc.) who have a role to play in managing the risk of Lyme disease. The focus group will be an informal workshop that brings together the various stakeholder groups at the community level. A total of 10 to 12 people will participate in the workshop\, presenting their views\, proposals and priorities for Lyme disease risk management. The outcome of this focus group will be a Lyme disease intervention plan for Blackburn Hamlet! \nWhen: Sunday July 9th 9am – 1:30pm. \nWhere: Blackburn Community Hall (190 Glen Park Drive) \nWhy: Why do you want to participate in this focus group? \n\nYou will be part of a pan-canadian initiative (a total of six municipalities in Canada have been recruited as part of this project)\nYou will contribute to creating a plan to prevent Lyme disease that is suited to your Blackburn Hamlet\nYou will help to create a community guide which describes the available strategies for prevention of Lyme disease\nYou will have the time to discuss Lyme disease issues with other locals and experts in the field\nLunch and snacks provided!\n\nFor more information about the study\, please contact University of Montreal researcher Camille Guillot at: camille.guillot@umontreal.ca \nTo register\, please email enviro@blackburnhamlet.ca with your name\, phone number and a brief description of your interest (or experience with) ticks & lyme disease.
