SUMMARY:Crime Prevention Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On June 18\, starting at 7 pm\, the BCA\, in cooperation with Ottawa Police Services\, will host a Crime Prevention Workshop at the Blackburn Community Centre\, 190 Glen Park Drive. The event will feature four specific components of Crime Prevention. They are: \n\nMake the Right Call: Learn how you are helping build a safer community by Making the Right Call. Calls to the Police must be prioritized quickly and responded to appropriately. Learn how “Make the Right Call” spells out which telephone number to call depending on the nature of the call — life threatening emergency or crime in progress (9-1-1)\, and other emergencies.\nNational Capital Crime Stoppers: Learn about Crime Stoppers\, a community-based tips program that allows residents to anonymously report information about crimes and offers cash rewards of up to $2\,000 for this information. Learn how in 2024\, the community’s support of Crime Stoppers led to $233\,345 worth of property being recovered\, and how Crime Stoppers can play a vital role in community safety.\nCAMSafe: Learn about the new police initiative designed to enhance crime prevention and investigations by leveraging community security cameras. Studies have shown security cameras have not only reduced crime rates but also act as an extra set of eyes to help police identify and apprehend criminals. This program establishes a community network that will help protect our neighborhoods.\nNeighbourhood Watch: Learn how your Neighbourhood Watch is evolving into a highly effective means for Neighbours to help Neighbours and our plans to enhance its expansion.\n\nThis event is open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend. The BCA is asking residents to please send confirmation of your attendance to safety@blackburnhamlet.ca by June 13 so that adequate logistical arrangements can be made. Refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Emergency Preparedness Plan
DESCRIPTION:Science is proving that climate change is affecting the frequency\, duration\, and intensity of many climate-related hazards and disasters occurring around the world\, including Ottawa. In Canada\, 2023 was the warmest summer in 76 years\, dating back to the start of national record-keeping in 1948. Canadians in cities\, including Ottawa\, suffered with some of the worst air quality on Earth. Ottawa experienced five tornadoes\, including an EF1 storm on July 13\, that struck Barrhaven. In April\, Ottawa had nine hours of continuous freezing rain. Many were still without power after two days. There were numerous vehicle accidents; sidewalks were coated with treacherous ice and Ottawa’s light-rail transit went down leaving dozens of commuters waiting hours to be evacuated. These events\, at times\, overwhelmed the city’s emergency services. The city is now requesting their communities act in a larger support role to such events. Blackburn Hamlet has been chosen as one of the first communities for this new concept. \nOn the evening of February 26\, at the Community Hall\, the BCA will be holding a community event to highlight the Blackburn Hamlet’s Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP). This event is a joint effort between the City of Ottawa’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the BCA and will include representation from community stakeholders\, such as police\, fire\, medical\, and businesses. \nA more detailed review of the night will be provided in the upcoming Banar. Queries should be directed to Don Kelly at safety@blackburnhamlet.ca.

SUMMARY:Adult Bike Riding
DESCRIPTION:The BCA will be holding an Adult Bike Riding session on Saturday\, June 10\, from 9-12 am. This event is designed to provide adult cyclists (18+) with safe\, effective bike riding strategies. Held at the Community Centre\, we are planning to hold information sessions on law enforcement\, developing safe and effective biking strategies\, introduce new bike safety features for large vehicles\, and provide bike maintenance sessions. We may also have a demonstration session where participants can learn how to load their bikes on OC Transpo buses. \nAfter the info session there will be a bike ride on roadways in the Hamlet\, including a controlled bike ride down Bearbrook Road where riders will have the opportunity to put into practice lessons learned from the information session and interacting with large vehicles provided by Lafarge Canada. \nMore detailed information will be provided in the Spring. \nIf you would like more information on this event or want to help us with this event\, please contact Robert Bellizzi at Robert@blackburnhamlet.ca . \n
