DESCRIPTION:The Future of Wireless Communications Networks: A Foresight towards 2050 – Dr. Halim Yanikomeroglu \nWhen: Thursday\, February 26\, 2026 at 7:00 PM \nWhere: Blackburn Community Hall\, 190 Glen Park Drive \nMobile communications and the Internet are among the two revolutionary technological achievements of the 20th century\, with transformative impacts on our lives and society. With one-quarter of the 21st century behind us\, the two paradigms with separate origins have become tightly intertwined. Most people access the Internet through their mobile devices most of the time. Today\, Internet access implicitly means mobile Internet\, making connectivity essential everywhere. The immersed connectivity of humans\, robots\, and all sorts of devices is expected to become part of our natural lives; as such\, ubiquitous connectivity is required. \nThe humanity will demonstrate its full potential in every dimension (economic prosperity\, wellbeing\, equal opportunity\, environmental\, and more)\, when the communities get access to ultra-high-speed connectivity in a sustainable\, reliable\, resilient\, intelligent\, green/clean/eco-friendly\, secure\, ubiquitous\, and affordable manner. \nTowards that end\, in this seminar\, we will explore how wireless networks are expected to evolve towards 2050 with terrestrial and non-terrestrial (space and near-space/stratosphere) segments. \nDr. Halim Yanikomeroglu is a Chancellor’s Professor at Carleton University\, Canada\, and the Founding Director of Carleton-NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks) Lab. His research covers many aspects of communications technologies with emphasis on wireless networks. He is a Fellow of several scholarly societies\, including IEEE\, the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC)\, the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE)\, and the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA); he served as a Distinguished Speaker for the IEEE Communications Society and the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society. He has coauthored 700+ peer-reviewed research papers including ~350 papers in 33 different IEEE journals; these publications have received 31\,000+ citations. He gives around 25 invited seminars\, keynotes\, panel talks\, and tutorials every year. He has had extensive collaboration with industry which resulted in 42 granted patents and successful technology transfer. He supervised or hosted in his lab 180 postgraduate highly qualified personnel. He served as the General Chair\, Technical Program Chair\, and Steering Committee Chair/Member of several major international IEEE conferences as well as in the editorial boards of several IEEE periodicals. He is currently serving in various leadership roles in the IEEE. Dr. Yanikomeroglu received several awards for his research\, teaching\, and service. He holds a PhD degree in electrical and computer engineering from University of Toronto. \nAdmission is free\, refreshments will be served and people of all ages are invited to attend. \nQuestions & Suggestions? DESCRIPTION:Eggs with a side of PFAS: the unseen legacy of forever chemicals in our Great Lakes’ aquatic life cycles  ̶  Geneviève Haché \nWhen: Thursday\, January 22\, 2026 at 7:00 PM \nWhere: Blackburn Community Hall\, 190 Glen Park Drive \nPer- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals present all around us. They make our pans nonstick\, our clothes and makeup waterproof and our containers greaseproof. After decades of use\, PFAS have now contaminated every corner of our planet. Their tough chemical bonds and resilience have earned them the name “forever chemicals”\, but what does this nickname imply? \nIn the Great Lakes\, PFAS contamination runs so deep that female fish unknowingly transfer some of their PFAS body load to their eggs through a process called “maternal transfer”. In other words\, PFAS are present in fish eggs before they start to develop. As luck would have it\, PFAS happen to be toxic to cells. If we know that PFAS are toxic\, then how does their presence affect the development of fish embryos? \nCome join us as we discuss PFAS contamination of our Great Lakes and our fish\, how we got here in the first place\, what this means for the future of our environment and how we can stay safe as consumers. \nGeneviève Haché is a first-year PhD student in Chemical and Environmental Toxicology at Carleton University. She studies the effects of toxic pollutants on the environment\, human health and animal health. Outside the lab\, Geneviève is a big nerd for language learning\, especially for Japanese and Mandarin Chinese\, and loves fantasy tabletop games like Magic the Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons. Geneviève can also be found jamming out with the National Capital Concert band\, hanging out with her cats and coaching gymnastics to kids and adults at Kazam Gymnastics. \nAdmission is free\, people of all ages are welcome\, and refreshments will be served. \nHope to see you there! \nQuestions & Suggestions? DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, May 22\, 2025 at 7:00 PM \nWhere: Blackburn Community Hall\, 190 Glen Park Drive \nTopic: The Making of a Podcast: “The Interview Dudes” \nSpeaker: James Charron \nJoin podcast producer James Charron as he gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of a wonderful podcast: The Interview Dudes. \nIn June 2019\, James`s son Jack and his friends\, Nathan\, and Ben — all finishing Grade 6 here in Ottawa — decided to launch a podcast. Initially\, their goal was simple: to interview their classmates and learn about various career paths. However\, with James`s guidance and support\, the podcast quickly evolved into something much more remarkable. \nThe inaugural episode featured James providing listeners with a glimpse into the world of voice acting. As the podcast gained momentum\, they secured interviews with prominent figures\, including Ottawa’s then-Mayor Jim Watson and\, notably\, Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds. \nTheir unique approach involved reaching out to potential guests through social media platforms. Over the years\, The Interview Dudes expanded their guest list to include scientists\, politicians\, athletes\, musicians\, and professionals from the film industry. This diverse range of interviews not only enriched the podcast’s content\, but also demonstrated that age is no barrier to achieving remarkable feats\, with the podcast climbing to the #2 Kids and Family podcast in Canada. \nJames’s role as producer was handling guest coordination and technical aspects\, while Jack\, Nathan\, and Ben focus on crafting insightful questions. This collaborative effort resulted in a podcast that showcases the enthusiasm and curiosity of youth\, proving that with passion and support\, anything is possible! \nAdmission is free\, refreshments will be served and people of all ages are invited to attend. \nQuestions & Suggestions? DESCRIPTION:First Crossing: Alexander Mackenzie`s fascinating crossing of North America — Richard Van Loon – Free Lecture \nWhen: Thursday\, October 24\, 2024 at 7:00 PM \nWhere: Blackburn Community Hall\, 190 Glen Park Drive \nAdmission is free\, refreshments will be served and people of all ages are invited to attend. \nAlex Mackenzie from Canada by land 22d July 1793 — Those simple words painted on a rock at the head of the North Bentinck Arm near Bella Coola BC mark the culmination of the first complete crossing of North America\, a voyage by one of Canada’s most famous trader/explorers\, Alexander Mackenzie. Mackenzie’s odyssey was indeed amazing but it would not have been possible without the support of several First Nations and a hardy group of traders who preceded his travels to the northwest. We will meet many of them\, and his dog\, as Mackenzie makes a perilous way west. Hang on. It’s a tough trip. \nRichard Van Loon was President and Professor Emeritus of Carleton University which he led from 1995 to 2005. He then returned teaching there in the School of Public Policy and Administration until 2015. He was a professor of political science and public administration at Queen`s\, University of Ottawa and Carleton\, intermingled with a career in the public service\, ending as Associate Deputy Minister of both Health Canada and Indian and Northern Affairs. \nThis talk and others on early Canadian history result from an ongoing interest rekindled after he left the presidency of Carleton in 2005. \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Dr. Paul Villeneuve: Breathing Life into Cities: The Importance of Greenness and Walkable Neighbourhoods \nWhen: Thursday\, May 23\, 2024\, at 7:00 PM \nWhere: Blackburn Hamlet Community Centre\, 190 Glen Park Drive \nThe design of cities plays an important role in the health of its residents.  Walkable neighbourhood and access to green spaces has been shown to have direct and indirect health benefits.  Some of these benefits include improved mental health\, healthier babies\, and reduced risks of several diseases. Nature also plays an important role in exposure to air pollution\, noise\, and the effects of urban heat island. Dr. Villeneuve will discuss these topics while drawing on some research he has led\, including Ottawa-based assessments of associations between greenness and physical activity\, environmental exposures studies in and around the Central Experimental Farm\, and the benefits of access to parks during the COVID-pandemic. \nDr. Paul Villeneuve is an environmental and occupational epidemiologist\, and received his PhD in epidemiology from the University of Toronto. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Carleton University. Before joining Carleton\, he was a Senior Research Scientist in the Healthy Environment and Consumer Safety Bureau at Health Canada. His research activities have focused on estimating the impacts of a number of environmental and occupational exposures on human health such as: air pollution\, diesel\, radon\, electromagnetic fields\, cigarettes\, radiation\, and features of the built environment (greenness\, noise\, and walkability). He has led many record linkage studies where occupational or survey data have been linked to national or provincial administrative health data and is currently investigating health effects among Canadian workers exposed to ionizing radiation. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Canadian Journal of Public Health\, and Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention\, and is chairing WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on the Occupational Burden of Disease Estimation. \nAdmission is free and no registration is required.
