“We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day,” said Blackburn CIBC Run for the Cure Chairperson Lynn Sewell, “and we raised just over $9,000, with 148 participants tackling the five kilometre route through the Hamlet. We more than doubled our participation over 2003, and increased our money raised to conquer breast cancer by more than a third”.
The Blackburn Community Hall was bustling with happy activity on a cool but sunny morning, on October 3rd, as Run for the Cure participants streamed in with their pledges and cash, and enjoyed coffee, hot chocolate and oranges, courtesy of Loeb’s in the Hamlet. Everyone signed a large canvas banner, preserving the names of all participants each year. They picked up bottled water, compliments of Shopper’s Drug Mart, and headed out to the Run. Councillor Rainer Bloess tooted a genuine Model A Ford horn to send them on their way, and Rainer’s sons helped everyone cross Innes Road safely. While a few keeners really did run, and some were exceptionally fast, most covered the scenic route at a more leisurely pace.
We were particularly pleased to have participation from Good Shepherd School, with teachers Terri Bolster and Christine Wing recruiting some 27 students and parents. Many of the participants came back to LB’s Bistro for the post Run party, where owner Scott Philip and wife Liz put on a fine buffet of fruit, veggies, croissants and muffins, along with coffee and tea. It was a fitting celebration of another community success.
The organizing committee, led by Lynn Sewell, included Cathy and Ken Greenlaw, Dannie and Bill Horne, Sue and Paul Walsh, Eric Sewell, Michelle Cliff and Pam Thornton, and they are already planning next year’s version. We’re indebted to Evelyn Budd of Budd Graphics, Ian Stoddart of iStoddart & Associates Ltd., Anne Moralejo of The Star and Weekly Journal and Helen Rosseau, the webmaster of the blackburnhamlet.ca website, who all contributed their professional expertise to help make this event a success.
Mark your calendars for Sunday October 2, 2005, and we will be back, bigger and better.
