2023 Cancer Chase

Cancer Chase 2023

This year’s Cancer Chase event will be a collaboration between the BCA and the Convent Glen Orleans Woods Community Association (CGWCA). The event will be held on September 24 at 975 Orleans Boulevard, near the Cairine Wilson High School in Convent Glen. This year’s theme is “Chase the Cure”.

All funds from the Cancer Chase go directly to cancer research at the Ottawa Hospital via the Ottawa Hospital Foundation. Last year more than 170 people attended our event and over $15,000 was raised. The Cancer Chase has become a vibrant community event that can be enjoyed by the entire family while supporting a worthwhile cause.

Discovery Café returns to Blackburn Hamlet

We are pleased to announce that Discovery Café is back! Before the pandemic, this popular series of public lectures, held at the former Blackburn Hamlet Community Church, featured experts in their fields sharing their knowledge and answering questions about a variety of fascinating topics.

In previous sessions, we learned about things such as the history of the Hamlet, the management of traffic to help animal migration, the story of the Ottawa River, the impact of Elvis, and the cause and effect of dreams. These thought-provoking sessions gave all who attended new perspectives on our ever-changing world.

The new Discovery Café monthly sessions will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month (see specific dates below), in the Blackburn Community Hall (190 Glen Park Drive). Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming sessions:

September 28, 2023 – Chemicals: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

October 26, 2023 – To be confirmed

November 23, 2023 – Detecting Fraud: A behind-the-scenes look

We look forward to seeing you!

The BCA is looking for a new Environment Director!

Earth Environment

The BCA is looking for someone who cares about the environment and our community to become our next Environment Director and Tree Team lead. This a volunteer position on our board and the interested participant would be involved in all BCA board meetings and decision-making. The role of the Environment Director is to work with eager volunteers to organize the annual Spring Cleanup, advertise the Garage Sale and coordinate other Environment related activities. As with all BCA board roles, there is plenty of room for creativity and new ideas in this portfolio are always welcome. If you are interested or if you have questions, send an email to enviro@blackburnhamlet.ca.

Outdoor Community Rinks Volunteers Needed

Rink Volunteers

The Blackburn Hamlet Community Association is seeking volunteers for our outdoor community rinks at Bearbrook rink and Norman Johnston School.  Volunteers will be responsible for creating and maintaining outdoor rinks from December through March.  We are seeking a team of volunteers for both rinks.  We currently have only 2 volunteers for the Norman Johnston Rink and the season is in jeopardy if we do not get additional support.  If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mark Lister at president@blackburnhamlet.com.

New Tick Talk Page on the BCA Website

Deer Tick

With the growing threat of Lyme Disease, the BCA Environment committee has been working with University of Ottawa researchers to assess  the impacts of urban landscapes on tick populations and tick-borne disease transmission.  The new Tick Talk page will be used to share what we learn with the rest of the community and ensure everyone is aware of the measures they can take to stay safe.
