  • Community Garage/Yard Sale

    May 6, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
    Private sales around the Hamlet

In these days of re-use, recycle and repair the benefits are obvious. If these reasons don't inspire you, I suggest a certain curiosity to get out and see what amazing collections of curios are hiding in the basement and cupboard catacombs of Blackburnites. So get out and make some extra cash while emptying your spare room, basement or garage. Find a treasure that will make you smile and keep our landfills, well, not full. For more information contact the Blackburn Hamlet Environment Committee at: enviro@blackburnhamlet.ca.

If you find some fixer-upper kid-sized bicycles while preparing your sale, bring them to Bicycle Re-cycle event the next day. Details on our website http://blackburnhamlet.ca/events.

Rain Date: Sunday, May 7th (same times)

Place "giveaways" on your curb after 3 p.m.

  • Bicycle Re-Cycle and Kids Bike Skills Development Day (Registration Requested)

    May 7, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Blackburn Hamlet Community Hall, 190 Glen Park Dr, Gloucester, ON K1B 5A3, Canada

Two sessions by age group. Read on for full details.

The Environment and Transportation Committee of the Blackburn Community Association is partnering with Velofix Ottawa to hold our first annual Bicycle Re-cycle and Kids Bike Skills Development Day.

We will be accepting donations of all children’s bikes no matter the condition. Velofix will assess, and make any required repairs before the BCA takes the used bicycles (and tricycles, scooters and skate boards) for re-cycling into the community. With each bicycle donated, our friends from Velofix will provide a quick free tune up and mechanical fitness check of one of your “keeper” bikes.

Also, the BCA will be offering an opportunity for children and youth ages 6 to 13 to participate in developing their biking skills at no cost. They will learn essential bicycle handling and traffic skills for young cyclists in a fun festival type atmosphere. Topics include helmet fitting, bicycle maintenance, handling, signalling, gears, braking, avoiding road hazards and more. Participants must know how to ride and must wear an approved cycling helmet.

This bike skills development day is being organized by Adam Kourakis, owner of Velofix Ottawa. He is an experienced cyclist and coach with the triathlon club Bytown Storm. The City of Ottawa Safe Cycling team is linked with the Canadian Cycling Association’s CANBIKE project and they have been invited to participate in this event.

A session will be held from 10AM to 1 PM for kids from 6 years to 9 years of age and a session for kids from 9 years to 13 years of age will follow from 1PM to 4PM. Please register via our website http://blackburnhamlet.ca/environment/.

If your child does not have a bike but can ride and would like to participate we should have a few loaners available from the bicycle re-cycle donations but please supply the helmet.

The location for the Bicycle Re-cycle and Kids Bike Skills Development Day will be in the parking lot in front of the community center near the arena. May 7 follows the annual Blackburn Hamlet Community Garage Sale on May 6 so dig out those old childrens’ and grandchildren’ bikes and plan to have the BCA re-cycle them in the Hamlet.

We would like to know how many people to expect so please register via email the BCA Environment & Transportation Committee's website http://blackburnhamlet.ca/environment/ . You can also email at enviro@blackburnhamlet.ca or call John at 613-824-6940 for further information.
